It’s here everyone, the Taco Bell collaboration I’m sure you’ve all been waiting for. And, no, it doesn’t involve Hot Cheetos, Takis, or Doritos Dinamita. Heck, it’s not even Tostitos or Juanitas. A corn chip would be too easy for the R&D team at Taco Bell headquarters, which is why their newest collab isn’t with a chip brand at all. Instead, it’s with a cheesy cracker—a Cheezy cracker, to be precise.
Until July 4 (or while supplies last), you can find the Big Cheez-It Tostada at a Taco Bell in California. And yes I mean a Taco Bell, because (at least for now) the only Taco Bell serving this beautiful abomination is the one at 2222 Barranca Pkwy. in Irvine, California. This may not be entirely random; Mythical Chef Josh has mentioned experimental products at a Taco Bell in Orange County on various episodes of A Hotdog Is a Sandwich and I’m wondering if it’s the same location or if there are multiple experimental Taco Bells in the O.C. Either way, the Big Cheez-It Tostada is only at this one location and, oh boy, is it a funny concept.
This dish consists of a giant Cheez-It (16 times larger than a normal Cheez-It and even larger than the Big Cheez-Its sold in stores), topped with seasoned beef, reduced-fat sour cream, diced tomatoes, lettuce, and shredded cheddar cheese, Food and Wine reports. And that’s not all. If you order online, you can also get a Big Cheez-It Crunchwrap Supreme, which consists of the mother of all Cheez-Its, seasoned beef, nacho cheese sauce, reduced-fat sour cream, diced tomatoes, and lettuce. The whole thing is then wrapped inside a tortilla and grilled, Crunchwrap style.
I have such mixed feelings about this. I don’t actually like Cheez-Its that much, but the thought of a giant one just seems so hilarious to me. If I lived in Irvine, I’d go get one of these Big Cheez-It Tostadas just to set it in resin so it would never go bad and I could look at it anytime I need a good laugh. And who knows? This thing might actually taste good! It’s cheesy stuff plus taco stuff—so what could be bad? If the test goes well at this Irvine location, it’s possible this could become a fixture at Taco Bells everywhere sometime in the future. And even though I can’t try it right now, at least the concept itself has me cheesin’, and that’s worth something.
